XIV CONCURSO INTERNACIONAL DE CLARINETE
“CIUDAD DE DOS HERMANAS”

REGULATION


1. THE AIM OF THE COMPETITION

The Excmo. Ayuntamiento de Dos Hermanas have decided to organize the XIV INTERNATIONAL CLARINET COMPETITION "TOWN OF DOS HERMANAS" wich will be sponsored by "Caja San Fermando Sevilla-Jerez".

The competition will be held in Dos Hermanas (Sevilla) between the 26 to 30 September 2006 and subjected to the following rules.


2. COMPETITORS

The competition is open to Clarinetists of any nationality no attained 32 years by 26th September 2006.

Application forms can be obtained by post from: Delegación de Cultura y Fiestas del Ayuntamiento de Dos Hermanas, Sevilla (Spain), by phone: (+ 34 (9) 5 491 95 70 /491 95 68) by fax: (+34 (9) 5 491 95 71)e-mail: (cultura@doshermanas.es) and internet:

www.doshermanas.es.

Completed forms must be received by post, fax or e-mail at the Town Hall of Dos Hermanas (41700 Dos Hermanas - Sevilla- SPAIN) before 12:00 (local time) on 3rd july 2006. Completed forms should be send with the following:

a) An authenticated copy of the aplicant's I.D., card or passport.

b) Two recent passport photos with the applicant's name on the back.

c) A "curriculum vitae" giving the essentials of training, teachers, professional experience and rp prizes obtained.

d) Programme to play at the Second Round (one work of each group). Competitor must send, with the inscription form, one copy of each work to play in this round, for exclusive utilisation of the Jury. It´s obligatory to indicate the “opus” of each work.

e) High quality sound recording video VHS-PAL or DVD playing the candidat the compulsory works of the First round. . The recording must be unedited and with piano accompaniment only. The clarinetist must be filmed from the front, at a 5 meters distance.

The closing date for applications will be strictly enforced. Any forms arriving late will not be accepted. If any documents are missing, the Administration will request the applicant to send them as soon as possible.

3 COMPETITOR´S OBLIGATIONS

Once admited to the competition, all competitors are obliged to take part in all the events at the dates and times prescribed by the Jury. Failure to comply with this rule will result in disqualification.

All competitors must supply their own instruments and music. His presentation must be at the Teatro Municipal “Juan Rodríguez Romero” (C/ Nuestra Señora de Valme, Dos Hermanas, telephone: (+34 (9) 5 472 67 11) at 20:00 on 26th September 2006. At the end of each round all candidats must attend the proclamation of the results.

Apart from their travel, food and accomodation casts, competitors will no have to pay any other fees.

4. ACCOMODATION FOR COMPETITORS

Accomodation for competitors and accompanists (should they choose to bring one) is their own responsability and is at their own expense.

The "Delegación de Cultura y Fiestas del Ayuntamiento" will assist in finding accommodation in hotels in the area. Accommodation can also be arranged with host families, for those who prefer it.

5. JURY

The competition Jury will be composed of eminent international musicians, chosed by the City Council of Dos Hermanas. The full list of the members of the Jury will be published at the start of the competition.

The jury have the right to interrupt a performance if they consider that they have heard enough to make a fair evaluation.

Any necessary abstention of a Jury member will obiously be taken into account when the final scores are being calculated.

At the end of the Final, the Jury will announce the Prize Winners. It reserves the right to withold any prize if it feels justified to do so.

At every stage of the competition, the Jury's decision will be final.The Jury also has the right to make a judgement on any point not covered in the rules.

6. COMPETITION PROGRAM

Each competitor will be called once only for each round. Missing will lead to automatic disqualification.

6.1. PRESENTATION OF COMPETITORS AND DRAW TO DETERMINE THE ORDER OF PLAY: This will take place at 20:00 on 26th September 2006 in the Teatro Municipal “Juan Rodríguez Romero”, Dos Hermanas: Any competitor who miss will be disqualified unless the Jury consider that their absence is truly justified.

6.2 COMPETITION STAGES: The competition will consist in the following test:

PREVIUOS ROUND (1rst Round): (Until 3rd july 2.006)
Jury will mark the video performances by the competitor of these compulsory works:
· I. Stravinsky........ 3 pièces solo clarinet.
· C. Debussy......... Première Rhapsodie (with piano).
Before the 1rst August 2006 Jury will notify the classified competitors.

SECOND ROUND: 27th september 2006, wednesday (morning and afternoon) and 28 september 2006, Thursday (morning).
Competitors must play one selected work of each followings groups:

Group 1 (With piano):
· L. Spohr................. Concert Nº 2 Op. 57.
· C.M. Weber............ Concert Nº 2.
· J. Françaix............. Concert.
· A. Copland............. Concert.
· P. Hindemith........... Concert.

Group 2 (With piano):
· G. Rossini............. Introd. Them. and variations.
· J. Brahms.............. One Sonate.
· M. Reger................One Sonate.
· F. Poulenc.............. Sonate.
· L. Berstein..............Sonate.

Group 3 (Unaccompanied clarinet)
· L. Berio................. Sequenza.
· P. Boulez............... Domaines.
· W. O. Smith............ Five pieces.
· E. Denissow............ Sonate.
· V. Bucchi.................Concert.
· A. Müllenbach..........Zei-Schatten (Cadenza).
· T. Olah................... Sonate.
· C. Bernaola.............. Solo para clarinete (Dedicado al Concurso de Dos Hermanas).
· T. Marco.................Valme (Dedicado al Concurso de Dos Hermanas).

Competitor must play 15-25 minutes the parts or fragments of the work proposed, choosen by raffle in the presence of the Jury.The competitors with the highest scores will go through the final round.

Final Round (3rd. Test) (With Orchestra): The 29th september 2006, Friday (afternoon).

· C. Nielsen................. Concert for clarinet (Until end of the Cadenzas).
· W.A. Mozart............... Concert for clarinet (2nd. Mov. Adagio).

FINAL CONCERT: 30 september 2006, Saturday, (afternoon)

Competitor proposed for the First Prize must confirm his classification playing satisfactory with Orchester this works:

· M. Castillo........”Orippo” para clarinete y orquesta de cuerda (dedicado al Concurso de Dos Hermanas).
· W.A. Mozart.... Concerto for clarinet.

All rounds are open to the public, and the results will be announced by the Jury at the end of each round.

6.3. PROGRAMME: The choice of works in the second round is free. The Jury may choose to hear only part of the programme prepared by the candidate.

7. ORDER OF PLAY

The draw which takes place after the registration of competitors and presentation of the Jury determines the order of play, which lasts throughout the competition.

8. ACCOMPANISTS AND REHEARSALS

A piano accompanist will be available to play for every candidate free of charge. Competitors may also bring their own pianist at their expenses.

Rehearsals with the official accompanists will take place on 25-26 September with the same order of the presentation. Competitors waiting his performance will rehearse in appropiate site.

Second round will begin 27th september at 9,00 a.m. in the Teatro Municipal "Juan Rodriguez Romero" (Nuestra Señora de Valme street).

Each finalist will be rehearse 45 minutes with the orchestra on 29 september in preparation for the final round, the next day. The schedule will be agreed with the conductor.

9. PRIZES

The following prizes will be awarded:

FIRST PRIZE "MANUEL CASTILLO": 8.000 €, and a clarinet offered by Buffet Crampon.
SECOND PRIZE: 4.000 € and a clarinet offered by Selmer. .
c) THIRD PRIZE: 2.000 €.

The Excmo. Ayuntamiento de Dos Hermanas is grateful for the support of the manufacturers of clarinets and accessories which enables additional prizes to be awarded to the semifinalists and finalist. Town Council try each winner could receive a clarinet offered by Buffet-Crampon, Selmer, or others manufacturers. The prize-giving will take place on 30 september after the Final Concert.


10. OBLIGATIONS OF THE PRIZE WINNERS

At the final concert the 30 september, the First Prize winner must play with success the Mozart’s Concert for clarinet and "Orippo, recitativo y allegro para clarinete y orquesta de cuerda",from Manuel Castillo. His part will given to the participants admitted.

The winner will also be expected to play, either together or separately, in any concert or recital which the Town Hall may organise during the following year, in collaboration with "Juventudes Musicales" or other organisations.


11. INCOMPATIBILITY

The 1rst prizewinner may not participate in the competition again for two years.

12. RIGHT TO BROADCAST

The Excmo. Ayuntamiento reserves the right to broadcast the performance during the competition on radio or television. They also reserve the right to use any recordings in any way whatsoever, at any time in the future.

These rights also apply to the sponsor of the competition "LA CAJA SAN FERNANDO SEVILLA- JEREZ".


13. RESPONSABILITY

The competition organizers disclaim any responsability for any accidents to or injuries suffered by any competitor during the competition.
